THE WEST MILL DERBY WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY

Wedding Photography at The West Mill

The West Mill is a historic industrial wedding venue in Derby. It’s been one of my favourite venues in the East Midlands for quite some time, and I feel very privileged to be one of the lucky wedding photographers listed on The West Mill’s recommended suppliers list.

The venue has been tastefully transformed from an industrial cotton spinning mill into an exclusive-use wedding venue in Derbyshire. Split over four floors, this magnificent Grade 1 listed building offers unique and separate spaces for up to 160 guests for your civil ceremony, wedding breakfast, reception, drinks and dancing. The West Mill’s outside space includes a delightful south-facing courtyard and garden, as well as a walkway running alongside the River Derwent that’s an idyllic setting for your wedding reception and, of course, the all-important photographs.

If you like bare brick walls, barrel-vaulted ceilings and Georgian windows drenching you in sunlight, this is the perfect backdrop for your wedding day. And I have to say, The West Mill is a dream venue for a documentary-style wedding photographer too.

Each of the four floors at this industrial wedding venue have their own dedicated uses. The benefit to you is that there’s no waiting around on your wedding day for a room to be rearranged. You'll have your ceremony on the top floor, move into the courtyard for confetti and drinks reception, head to the second floor for your wedding breakfast and then party all night on the first floor!

If it happens to be raining on your wedding day, don’t stress – rain has never caused any problems for me at The West Mill. The ground floor space, which opens onto the courtyard, provides plenty of space for wedding guests to take shelter until the rain stops.

I’ve put together this handy guide for couples planning to get married at The West Mill. There are tips on where to shoot the group shots, ideas for timings and flow of the day, and more insider advice. I hope it helps with organising your wedding day timeline so everything runs smoothly.

And I’d love to be the one to capture your special day. I'm an experienced wedding photographer with over 15 years’ experience of shooting weddings, I know The West Mill inside out, and can handle any situation I'm faced with. If you choose me for wedding photography at The West Mill wedding venue, you can rest assured that you’ll be in good hands.

Hi, I'm Mamad! I'm a wedding photographer based between Nottingham and Derby, specialising in natural, unobtrusive coverage of relaxed and informal weddings. I mix this documentary-style coverage with as many group photos as you'd like with your friends and family, and a few creative portraits that will make the most of the amazing light and stylish industrial details of The West Mill. All my packages include an online planning meeting so we can get to know each other, and to discuss your plans in further detail.

8 REASONS TO CHOOSE THE WEST MILL FOR YOUR WEDDING

1/ Beautiful accommodation

There are two gorgeous accommodation options at The West Mill: The Mill House and The Mill Cottage, both just a stone’s throw from the main venue.

The Mill House is the larger of the two. It has eight en-suite double bedrooms and is catered the morning after your wedding, so the amazing team will cook you up a buffet breakfast to help cure the post-wedding hangovers!

The Mill Cottage is slightly smaller, accommodating up to 10 adults in four bedrooms. The Mill Cottage is self-catered and comes with a gorgeous enclosed garden, perfect for pre-wedding drinks and photos.

Having accommodation on site is really handy for the night before and after the wedding, so you and your wedding party have somewhere to stay that’s just steps away from the venue. You can also both get ready in one location before the ceremony, which saves on organising cars.

Lastly, you and your closest can dine in style the night before your wedding day at the beautiful Cottonworks which is right next to the Mill Cottage.

2/ The stylish dressing room

The dressing room at The West Mill is definitely one of the most beautiful ‘getting ready’ areas I’ve seen for the wedding party. Filled with handmade furniture and comfortable seating, it seems like every detail has been thought out carefully, so you and your party can get ready in style. It really is a photographer's dream!

The dressing room is available from 11am on the morning of your wedding day and is the perfect place to retreat to throughout the day should you need a few minutes of peace and quiet.

3/ The grand ceremony room

You exchange your vows in the Cotton Quarter, a room that’s simply oozing with character. With brick walls, an original tiled floor, an unusual cast-iron ceiling and big Georgian windows, it’s a wonderful backdrop for atmospheric ceremony photos.

4/ The amazing courtyard space

Once you’ve said your vows, you can enjoy drinks in the downstairs south-facing courtyard, which has gorgeous views over the river and its weir. Not only does this space allow for an ideal confetti shot in front of the iconic main entrance door, but it's also a great area for your wedding guests to mingle. There’s a horsebox bar here too, so you don't need to go far for a top up!

When it comes to styling the space, you can have huge light up ‘LOVE’ letters arranged here to provide a backdrop to photos. There’s also plenty of room to have outdoor games to entertain your guests.

I’ve also used the courtyard area for sparkler photos at the end of the night on several occasions. There’s plenty of room to organise a sparkler tunnel, or a group shot holding sparklers. If you’re interested in this type of shot, be sure to ask me for some advice, as it takes a lot of prior planning.

5/ The picturesque gardens

Just over a few steps from the courtyard are gardens that run alongside the banks of the River Derwent. These provide a romantic and unique backdrop for your formal group shots, as well as some more creative couple's shots.

6/ The versatile breakfast room

The breakfast room is a great space that can easily be styled to your taste. You can enjoy your wedding feast on either round tables or trestle, and the room is surrounded by large windows providing plenty of natural light for photographs during the speeches.

7/ Sunset wedding portraits

If you're a fan of dreamy couple's portraits taken at golden hour, this venue provides the perfect opportunity for it. We can take some time away from the party to wander through the gardens and find the perfect spots for your portraits.

8/ Dance the night away

Cut your wedding cake and have your first dance in The Spinning Room. This versatile space is ready for whatever kind of entertainment reception you want, from DJs to live music.
